Why eat out??

Hi guys,
I hope everyone had a decent morning. It started off kind of gloomy here and then became beautiful around 12:00 pm. This morning I was craving cool fruit but I knew I would not stay full for long with just fruit so I added a tiny bit of oatmeal that I cooked in the microwave with 1/4 of a banana, 1 prune, and tons of cinnmaon.
I cleaned up the apartment and talked to my grandmother for an extremely long time this morning. She loves to talk but I love to visit her ( she lives in Jupiter, Flordia) so it worked out well. I am considering Flordia International Unviersity for grad school in public health so I may make a visit soon! I went to the gym and had a better run than last time but something is still off. I ran for 30 mins.
5 min warm up at 6.4
20 mins of alternating 1:30 sprints with .45- 1.00 min break between of 6.8
7.6
8.0 X 3
9.4
9.6
10.2
and then finally a 5 min cool down on 7. I mossied on over to the elliptical for a 10 min extra cardio kick and then did 3 sets of 15,15,20 push ups and 2 sets of 50 sec abs.
I felt pretty good after this work and my spirits were finally high! I was happy to be in a good mood until .....
I set out to do some returing of killer shoes and shopping for apartment things and decdied I was going to treat myself on this beautiful day and sit outside at panera for a nice yummy lunch. Well, needless to say I will not be going to panera bread for a very long time. The poppyseed salad is my favorite and they stopped serving that a few days ago. I decided I was going to try something different but not boring. So, I went for the Cobb salad and subsituted feta for gorgonzola. I was HIGHLY HIGHLY dissapointed. I did not eat the bacon, I have tried to stop eating the yolks of eggs due to my newly discovered high cholesterol and the dressing was greek dressing. The only nutritional gems in that salad were the romaine lettuce, the tomatoes, the egg white, and the chicken. I wanted to scream not to mention I payed a wopping $10 dollars for a sub par salad and an unsweetend ice tea. You live and you learn but I always get upset when I feel I have wasted my money. I have been trying to tell myself the rest of the day that it is ok and I would have never known what that salad tasted like if I had not tried it. I also have been wanting to go to Panera so it is now out of the way.
My dinner last night out numbered nutrition and taste by 1000 percent and cost 1/4 of the price. From now on I will only try new places I have never eaten at and I will not go out as much. I enjoy cooking at home and am going to try to cook more with new recipes as opposed to spending my money. The most ironic thing about the situation is the fact that on the door of our panera bread it says "voted healthiest on the go restaurant" this made me giggle. I would have rather had a grilled chicken salad from chick-fila. I will post my pictures tonight when I get home from work. I also made a Trader Joe's trip today even though I was in a bad mood. It brighten my spirits but I did not get everything I needed because to be honest I was in no mood to shop after Panera.

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed

Good evening :)
Sorry I have not been doing well with my post. I have become lazy because I keep telling myself this weekend when I have a lot of free time I will get my blog completely organized. So for the time being I will post what I have and let you know about my un eventful day.
I started off my day very early again because I had to meet my professor at 730 on campus to go over Spanish because I SUCK at languages. My professor said if I come an thirty Min's early to class everyday it will help me pass the class so of course I am going to do it! I want to graduate this year!!!! My breakfast was a very small bowl of cereal with life, shredded wheat , and a few strawberries. Let's just say it was very small and didn't hold me over at all. After class I had to go to the post office which turned into a wild goose chase because they told me the wrong office but while I was exploring I had a wonderful ripe plum.
My lunch today was not really a lunch at all which seems to be the trend on Tuesdays and Thursday because of classes. I snacked on an orange around 1230 before my behavioral medicine class where we proceeded to learn about the nervous system. Dr. Lopater let us at extra early today which was nice so I was able to go home and watch my online lecture as well as get a reflexive paper out of the way. I had been starving since the middle of Lopaters class and immediately made a Delicious green monster but it was more brownish blue haha when I got home.
My monster included: 1/2 banana, vanilla soy, handful of frozen mangolicious ( mango's, blueberries, and raspberries), 1/2 a kiwi, Cinnamon, spoonful of naturally more peanut butter, and last but not least a handful of spinach. A splash of water and ice cubes were also included but they are not very important.

Needless to say it was amazing and hit the spot. I had a killer headache and had felt like I was hit by a train all day so I need something cool and refreshing. My father came to my apartment after I finished my work to remove our broken dryer so the apartment complex can put a new one in. Lets just say I have mountains of laundry due to a month of my dryer not working. The picture of my dinner is self explanatory but honestly I am still dreaming about how great it really was. I want to eat it all over again.

After dinner I had a sweet treat of 1/4 of my vanilla yogurt, peanut butter, strawberries, and two slices of a banana with a few mini choc late peanut butter cups ( yes I'm addicted). I have decided that I am going to try to cut out sweets and only eat them on the weekends because I have started to notice I have been eating sweets almost every night. Hopefully I can stick with it. I just had putting all that sugar in my body when I could be eating Delicious food instead. I am off to finish watching super size me ( The movie amazes me every time) , work on my health questions, and research more about graduate programs. I want to go out of state SOOO bad but it is very expensive so I am weighing my options. Have a great night and a wonderful Friday.

If you have any ideas to help decrease the cost of out of state for grad. school please let me know!

Oh no

Good evening everyone

At this point in my blogging life that means no one haha. I am sorry I am just now blogging for the day everything has been so hectic lately. To get started with my eventful day I had an wonderful morning with a cup of coffee out on my porch while reading the latest issue of self magazine. The weather is becoming chilly in the morning but is still enjoyable to sit outside. After my coffee and reading I packed my bag for class and a run and then made myself an awesome breakfast sandwich. I used a whole wheat english muffin, one egg white ( i will explain the egg white later), and a piece of low fat kraft cheese. It was DELICIOUS and just what I needed to fuel me for my 5 mile run after class. I had a side of fruit along with it for some yummy nutrients and vitamin C.

After my class, my 5 mile run which was quite awful. Lately my runs have not been feeling good. My legs can go but my lungs feel like they want to burst out of my chest but I think hope it is just because I was sick with a bad cough a few weeks ago. After my run I went up to the tutoring room and chatted with my best friend on campus for a little until I had a meeting with my professor from my behavioral medicine class. My professor requested that we get our cholesterol and triglycerides checked for his class and my results came back dun dun dun... BAD :( it was a horrible feeling. My family was shocked and then I was informed about the long family history of high cholesterol. SO, Dr. Lopater being that he is my advisor and knows I run on a daily basis as well as love to eat healthy wanted to ease my mind and explain exactly what is going on and draw me wonderful pictures of blood lipids as well as other pretty pictures haha. Dr. Lopater is a great man and I will refer to him in my post often.
The results basically showed that I may need to start cholesterol medicine if my results come back similar in the next few months which is really upsetting but Dr. Lopater said if I was not as healthy as I am my cholesterol would be sky high and we would have a serious problem. All and all I was satisfied and headed home for a shower and lunch. Lunch was very veggie filled and nutritious today because I have been feeling icky with a lack of vegetables in my life.

I visited my summer internship this afternoon and was able to talk with Holly the head nutritionist and we discussed some options for my cholesterol which was also very nice. Holly runs a dietcise program at the facility which consist of a nutrition class once a week for 90 minutes and then an hour of exercise twice a week. I was lucky enough to go through the whole 8 weeks with one group and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The people were all so willing to learn and were so intrigued at all the healthy benefits from food and all the yummy HEALTHY recipes that were available. I am jealous of her job and wish I could watch all the groups grow but school was calling my name.

Anyways, sorry I got off on a tangent. After my visit I did school work until it was time for dinner. I made one of the best burritos I have had in a long long time. The burrito consisted of a la tortilla factory rosemary tortilla and included sauteed green pepper, mushrooms, spinach, and carrots with a little chipotle seasoning. Then I added warm black beans, homemade corn, tomato, and avocado salad and wrapped him up to warm on the George Forman grill. It fell apart which was upsetting but the burrito tasted so good and I did not eat all the wrap which was a positive in my part.

I am off to watch another movie for my abnormal psych class and prepare for my long day on campus tomorrow. I hope everyone has a great night!

Bonefish

I decided to post after work due to some leftover energy that I am feeling. I don't usually like to eat after work but my stomach was feeling empty from all the little snacks I had today. Work went well I was in at 5:30 and out by 9:00. I did not make great money but at least I tried. When I got home I went right to the kitchen and chugged 2 glasses of water which is probably due to the lack of water during work and the wine/strawberry martini we were able to taste and let me tell you it was yummy.

After work if I do eat something it is usually a yogurt or a piece of fruit but tonight I switched it up a little.
In my little bowl I had a scoop of Trader Joe's' low fat cottage cheese (def my fav.) and a scoop of low fat vanilla yogurt. I added a few strawberry slices, a slice of a peach, a few tomato slices and 1/2 of a carrot stick. On the side I enjoyed a piece of warm ciabatta bread from work.
Reading my blog you will come to find out I like to do little portions of many things for a lot of my meals. I am not sure why maybe its because I love food and I want everything haha. I hope everyone has a good night. I will not be as busy tomorrow with classes so I will be able to blog more often.

Good morning/afternoon everyone

Sorry I am just now posting I will get better at this as I learn more and more about blogging and how to manage school , work , and blogging. I started my morning off at 6 a.m to prepare for my day and study for a Spanish quiz. I enjoyed a wonderful cup of fresh markets amaretto coffee as I studied for Spanish and mentally prepared myself for the long day.

My breakfast was rushed and eaten in the car unfortunately because I had to pack my workout bag , lunch and school bag before I left at 7 for my classes. I had an whole wheat english muffin with naturally more peanut butter which I love. I accompanied that with some strawberries and really ripe cantaloupe that I purchased for 99 cents at farm fresh the other day. It was a great find. Sorry I only took a picture of the cantaloupe due to the fact that I took these pictures after I devoured my fruit.

I went to the gym after spanish and did a total body weight training work out and 15 mins of the bike. I was feeling a little hungry again around 1045 right before my history of the east class so I enjoyed a clementine.

After class I sat on the stairs outside of our library in the common area and enjoyed the scenery and all the interesting people. I snacked on a plum and a banana and then proceeded to my behavioral medicine class at 1.

Dr. Lopater let us out early around 230 which was great because I work at 530 and I was dreading the short amount of time I would have at my apartment to get some school work done.

When I got home I had yet another snack of a mixture of sorts including:
1/2 of a kiwi ( I wasn't in the mood for the other half) 1/2 of a carrot stick, Annie's bunny grahams, strawberries, a little green peppers and some cereal with vanilla soy milk.

I have to go into work tonight at 530 at Bonefish Grill so I wont be getting home until 1030 or so. I will leave you with a new post in the morning. Have a great rest of the day and enjoy your evening.

Dinner and a movie

Yesterday afternoon I ran out for a bit to take a break from doing work. I went to the fresh market where I always buy chocolate covered peanuts, cashews, and yogurt covered pretzels. Its my guilty pleasure. I was having a craving for sweet and salty to that is my go to food. I also wanted to try a new flavored coffee so I bought a tiny amount of ground beans to taste test.

I had to go to campus for a film viewing of one flew over the cuckoos nest at 7:00 so dinner was promptly around 630 and consisted of more leftovers. I added cottage cheese and a salad for more nutritional value this time

My salad included - spinach, cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, green pepper, and a roma tomato topped off with Annies Tuscany dressing. It was delicious :)

After my movie I came home and was craving for a little snack it included: Strawberry O's from trader joes ( I purchased them yesterday and I really do not like them very much but what can ya do) some choc. covered pretzels, honey grahams, a swedish fish, and a yogurt covered pretzel.

Dinner and work

Last night I ran out around 5:00 to fresh market to pick up some yummy flavored coffee (ameretto) and some choclate covered peanuts and cashews . DELICIOUS! I am craving salty and chocolate recently so I needed to satisfy the beast. I made dinner around 6:15 before I had to go to campus and watch a film for my abnormal psychology class.

Dinner included more baked ziti , a salad with spinach, cucumber, green pepper, mushroom, carrots, and a roma tomato with a sprinkle of Annies Tuscan dressing

The first day...

Hi everyone,

I am not sure how I should go about starting this but I guess I will give you a recap of what I did today and why I truly am writing this blog.

First off....

I woke up this morning and made myself a cup of coffee while I worked on the finishing touches for a paper I had due in my morning class (abnormal Psychology). I then proceeded to eat breakfast which was a small bowl of cereal (life and shredded wheat) with blueberries and a grapefruit. After class I went to the gym and did 30 mins of the elliptical and 10 mins. hard on the bike.

I then ventured to TRADER JOE'S probably one of my favorite things/stress relievers to do!!! I am obsessed with Trader Joe's they are basically amazing and I will promote them for as long as I can. I bought a few essential things and then had an awesome leftovers that I made for my parents last night.
( I added spinach to it for some extra nutrients)

One of my favorite comfort foods baked ziti with no other than deer sausage. You read right DEER sausage. I will explain that momentarily. Since lunch I have been doing school work etc. and now developing my new blog.

Sorry for the very very long first post but it will end shortly

As for the development of this blog. As I said before I started reading food blogs about a year ago now. Tina from Carrots n' cake was my first blog and then I started reading Kath eats as well. I love their passion for food and for nutrition as well as the fact that they still live their lives to the fullest and seem to have a great time doing it. I am a strong advocate for indulging every once in awhile and never passing up good food even if its not healthy because it will ruin your diet. Eating healthy means balancing the good and bad, never putting food items off limits, maintain a healthy view of food, and indulging from time to time. I hope to show through my new blog a healthy yet college lifestyle of food, fitness, and fun. I have a serious passion for all things food and I happen to love fitness. I am an avid runner and have completed to many 5K's to name and one 1/2 marathon. I plan to complete my second half in November!! I interned this summer at Riverside wellness and Fitness center in VA. and was able to work with amazing people. I learned so much about nutrition, well-being, and personal training and hope to offer some advice or personal insight on different subjects throughout my life.

My main goals for this year include:

  • Applying/getting accepted into Grad school for Public Health

  • Passing the GRE ( so so so so scared)

  • Completing the 1/2 marathon in under 2 hours

  • enjoying my last year of college by visiting my friends as much as possible

  • Maintain a positive outlook on life/my future/school

I hope that you all are willing to enjoy the journey with me. Now about that deer meat haha. My father is a hunter and has loved to hunt ever since I can remember. I grew up eating deer meat and not necessarily knowing it was deer meat due to the fact that it looks like beef. Now that I am in college and know much more about animal cruelty etc. I only really eat deer meat or free range chicken unless I am at a restaurant. Although I am not a vegetarian I eat very little meat, probably once a week. I enjoy deer meat because it is free ( my father gives it to me), its very lean, and its organic. I usually eat it in either the sausage form or ground up for burgers, pasta sauce, or any random recipe I come up with. I hope everyone enjoys my blog and like I said before I am very open for suggestions!

These are some pictures of friends and family

Welcome to my new blog!! My name is Whitney and I am currently a senior at Christopher Newport University in Newport News VA. I started reading food blogs about a year ago now and have decided to partake in my own adventure as I begin a new school year and start applying to graduate programs. I am 21 years old with a passion for food, fitness, and health and wellness. I love all types of food good and bad and try my hardest to keep a nutrtionally balanced lifestyle while living the college life. Although my passion stems from food I want to go to grad school for public health so that one day I can really help make a difference in a community through wellness. Through this blog I hope to share with you my upcoming challenges i.e. half marathon in november, grad school applications, senior year, social life, etc. and hopefully learn new things about myself as well ! Most importantly I will be sharing all my crazy food choices with you as well as reviews on new products and restaurants. I hope everyone enjoys!!!

This is extremely new to me so any advice negative/positive I would greatly appreciate. Also I am sorry if its a little unorganized at first. Have a good day!
